We're thrilled to announce that Plan2Build has been awarded the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID) Award for Heritage Renovation at the 2024 National Design Awards ceremony in Mumbai.
The Award
The IIID Awards are among the most prestigious recognitions in Indian interior design, honoring excellence across categories including residential, commercial, hospitality, and heritage projects. The Heritage Renovation category specifically recognizes projects that successfully balance preservation of historical character with modern functionality.
The Winning Project
Our Mylapore Heritage Home Revival project, completed in 2023, was recognized for its sensitive approach to renovating a 1965 bungalow while preserving its original Athangudi tiles, Burma teak woodwork, and architectural character.
The jury citation read: "An exemplary demonstration of how heritage homes can be brought into the 21st century without losing their soul. The meticulous documentation, skilled restoration, and invisible integration of modern systems set a standard for heritage renovation in India."
A Team Achievement
This award belongs to our entire team and our trusted craftsmen partners. Special recognition goes to:
- The tile conservation specialists from Chettinad who matched original Athangudi patterns
- Our HVAC partners who designed the concealed climate control systems
- The heritage carpentry team who restored 60-year-old teak joinery
- And most importantly, Dr. Lakshmi Venkatesh, whose trust in our vision made this project possible
Our Commitment to Heritage
This recognition strengthens our commitment to heritage preservation. Chennai has a remarkable stock of mid-century homes that deserve thoughtful renovation rather than demolition. We hope this award inspires more homeowners to consider preservation as a viable path.
What's Next
We're currently working on three more heritage projects in Chennai, including a 1950s art deco apartment in Royapettah and a traditional agraharam house in Triplicane. Each presents unique challenges and opportunities to blend old and new.
Thank you to IIID, our clients, and everyone who believes in the value of preserving our architectural heritage while embracing modern life.
