Many of our clients want their homes to follow Vastu Shastra principles while still looking contemporary and stylish. Far from being contradictory, we've found that Vastu and modern design can work beautifully together. Here's our approach.
Understanding Vastu in Context
Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture, is fundamentally about creating harmonious living spaces. Its principles—proper orientation, natural light, ventilation, and the placement of functions—align remarkably well with modern design thinking.
Rather than treating Vastu as a set of rigid rules, we interpret it as a framework for well-being that can be adapted to contemporary life.
Key Vastu Principles and Modern Solutions
The Northeast (Ishaan) Corner
Vastu recommends keeping the northeast light and open. In modern design, this translates to:
- Placing large windows or glass walls in this direction
- Using this corner for meditation rooms, home offices, or study areas
- Avoiding heavy furniture or storage in this zone
This actually creates beautiful spaces—the northeast catches morning light, making it ideal for rooms where you want gentle illumination.
The Kitchen Placement
Traditional Vastu places the kitchen in the southeast. When this isn't possible (as in many apartments), we focus on the placement of the stove and cooking zone within the kitchen, which can still follow Vastu guidelines regardless of the room's location.
Modern interpretations also emphasize:
- The cook should not face the wall while cooking (island designs achieve this)
- Natural ventilation is essential (proper chimney and window placement)
- The sink (water element) should be separated from the stove (fire element)
Bedroom Guidelines
Vastu's bedroom recommendations—sleeping with the head toward the south or east, avoiding mirrors facing the bed, and keeping the space clutter-free—align perfectly with modern sleep science and minimalist design principles.
The Color Connection
Vastu associates different colors with different directions and elements. Rather than fighting this, we use it as a starting point for color palettes:
- Northeast: Light blues and whites (water element)
- Southeast: Warm oranges and reds (fire element)
- Southwest: Earth tones and browns (earth element)
- Northwest: Grays and whites (air element)
These color principles, when applied subtly, create naturally balanced interiors.
When Vastu and Practicality Conflict
Sometimes, following Vastu literally isn't possible—apartment layouts are fixed, structural walls can't move, and budgets are real. In these cases, we work with Vastu consultants to find acceptable compromises and remedies that don't compromise design quality.
The goal is always a home that feels good to live in—and that's what Vastu, at its heart, is about.
